2008 Mother and Father of the Year

Dear OHJA Board,

Looking back over our lives, we consider the milestones. As we ponder these, poignant questions come to mind. Who has steadfastly been there? Who has supported, guided, and inspired us? Who have we always been able to count on no matter what?

For our family, there is no question. It has never been just one—but it has always been a team of Two. Their common goal and heartfelt desire was to nurture and raise a family that loved one another, helped each other, worked together, and played together—sharing life's blessings and sorrows. Therefore, it is impossible to nominate only one of this matched set.

The earliest childhood memories of our parental team began while Mom and Dad were in their early 20's. Working together on their Port Orchard, Washington farm, they endeavored to establish a family oriented atmosphere that included all types of outdoor activities, including of course, horses. Mom was always on the move as can be imagined with four young children and all the loving Motherly attention she showered upon us. We still believe Dad never slept. He worked his full time job and then would work on the farm until well into the evening hours.

Amidst all of life's hustle and bustle our parents strived to build a horse facility that the entire family could participate in and enjoy. This family enterprise blossomed and soon Mom was instructing other students and training horses. Dad was building or repairing the barns, fences, jumps as well as helping with those "tough" horses that were in training.

In the midst of it all Mom and Dad never lost sight of the ultimate goal—family involvement. Together as a family we worked, played, laughed, enjoyed each other, and learned life's lessons. Horses grew into a mainstay. We had the time of our lives: showing, traveling, extended hotel stays and always with a pool, trail riding, wonderful friends, restaurant food, hay forts and much more. It was without question a charmed childhood. And just to make sure we stayed grounded, we had our chores and obligations. We did our share of complaining about these as most kids do but Mom and Dad knew the value of a balance between work and play. There was no question that we would learn to do both equally well.

We took for granted, as most children do, the efforts and sacrifices of our parents. We were never neglected. We were always made to feel that we were a valuable and a very important part of the family team. Somehow Mom and Dad always managed to have and care for, suitable mounts for all four of us. Not to mention the tack, show attire, vets bills, shoeing, entry fees... and the list goes on.

Looking back now through adult eyes, we realize the tremendous concerted effort it took to make all this happen. We are overwhelmed by their commitment. We now realize that so many of those selfless late work nights and early mornings were a result of maintaining that commitment. Through it all Mom and Dad have been wonderful roll models and examples to us all. Sharing unquestionable love, humor, guidance and—oh yes, discipline when called for.

And now all their experience has been channeled into their grandchildren. All of them have the opportunity to ride and enjoy the wonders of the horse world. Mom and Dad's quest continues...

Please consider this request to co-nominate our parents for Mother and Father of the Year. Many of you, at some point in your life, have known them as Mr. and Mrs. "B", or Tom and Judy Brawley; but to us they have always been Mom and Dad/Grandma and Pap.

Sincerely,
The Brawley Children
and Grandchildren
